D.C. medical malpractice taskforce named

A D.C. medical malpractice taskforce created by the D.C. Council's Committee on Health held its first meeting to discuss insurance rates for doctors practicing in the District.

The taskforce agreed on six topics for future debate, including elimination of unwarranted lawsuits, inadmissibility of benevolent gestures, early mandated mediation, 90-day notice of plaintiff's intending to file suit, patient safety and insurance regulation reform.

A new report by the Public Citizen consumer group found that despite complaints by some District doctors and politicians about a medical liability “crisis,” the total value of medical malpractice payments to victims made on behalf of District doctors has declined 52.5 percent from 1991 to 2004 when adjusted for medical inflation – which has averaged 4.7 percent a year.

The taskforce plans on meeting June 8 and throughout the summer until a report is issued to the health committee.
