Cook County, IL approves $35 million medical malpractice settlement

Cook County, Illinois commissioners have approved a $35 million medical malpractice settlement for a woman severely brain damaged.

The settlement will be paid over three years to the family of Neveen Morkos, a 30-year old mother of two. Morkos suffered brain damage in May 2004 while being treated at Oak Forest Hospital, a county hospital.

The woman's family filed the lawsuit, claiming Morkos went to the hospital complaining of stomach pains and was misdiagnosed with appendicitis before being sent for emergency surgery. The suit claimed an anesthesiologist improperly inserted a breathing tube during the surgery and Morkos was left without oxygen for more than 10 minutes.

Last month, the county approved a $12 million settlement with the family of a Chicago woman whose family also claimed permanent brain damage was suffered after an anesthesiologist at Stroger Hospital improperly inserted a breathing tube before the patient's back surgery.
