Illinois lawyer says insurance to blame for high medical malpractice insurance
Doctors and medical groups have been quick to point the finger at medical malpractice lawsuits for the high costs of medical malpractice insurance. According to the president of the Illinois State Bar Association, doctors are looking at the situation from the wrong angle. Instead of blaming the legal profession, doctors should be questioning insurance companies that have increased Illinois medical malpractice rates in response to losses by insurance companies in the stock market.
The lawyer believes some doctors are given an unclear picture of what is happening because doctors that have never been sued for medical malpractice will see increases in their insurance rates, which is unfair on the company’s part. He also pointed out that not enough regulation on doctor practices appear to be in place. On average, just one Illinois doctor a year will be disciplined for medical malpractice.
