$21 Million Awarded to Paralyzed Malpractice Victim
The largest malpractice verdict in Chicago’s 16th Circuit Court was handed down yesterday by a jury who awarded a woman left paralyzed by a botched procedure $21 million in damages.
Narin Bun, 41, suffered severe paralysis and lost her ability to speak after an improper procedure caused her to have a stroke. The then 37-year-old mother of three had initially been admitted to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin to be treated for a non-life-threatening infection.
The lawsuit, which was filed in 2003, alleged that a nurse incorrectly disconnected a catheter, allowing air into her blood vessel and resulting in obstruction of the blood flow.
After a two month trial, a Kane County jury awarded Bun $500,000 for her pain and suffering, $8.5 million for past and future medical expenses, and $12.5 million for her loss of a normal life.
“The jury understood that substantial medical expenses were involved in the case in order to care for this woman,” said Donald Shapiro, co-counsel for Bun.
Peter Flowers, who also represented Bun, said the largest verdict in the 16th Judicial Court prior to Wednesday had been $6 million.
