Nursing Home Investigated in Case of Residentís Death
Authorities are investigating an unexpected death at a nursing home in Medford, Massachusetts, on suspicions of nursing home neglect. John Medeiros, a 78-year-old man was found on the ground unconscious and without a pulse behind the Medford Courtyard Nursing Home. By the time the emergency crews were able to transport Medeiros to a hospital, his life would only sustain for an hour longer.
Courtyard Nursing home claims that they encourage their residents to get up and walk around occasionally and even leave the facility if they sign out, however, this was not the case with John Medeiros. Investigators are concerned by the fact that Medeiros was able to leave for a period of time unnoticed.
Medford's Mayor, Michael McGlynn has commented that Courtyard Nursing Home is taking measures to ensure that this type of tragedy will not occur again. “It always seems to be a nice place but when a situation like this comes up, you have to check things—no matter how well everything has been in the past—to make sure more safeguards are in place,” the mayor said in a statement regarding the facility.
The State Department of Public Health will now take steps to determine if this was in fact a case of elderly abuse and neglect.
