Medical malpractice lawsuit results in an award of $850,000 in damages
2004-02-11
The jury has awarded $850,000 to a man that developed seizures and other medical complications when a doctor operated on the wrong side of his brain. The doctor then closed the surgical site when realizing he was not operating on the correct side and removed the aneurysm from the correct side. According to the patient, the surgical mistake caused brain damage that resulted in seizures, memory problems, personality changes, and the inability for him to hold down a job for over a year.
The doctor refuted that the surgical errors caused adverse after effects, but the jury ruled against the doctor due to his negligence. The medical malpractice lawsuit resulted in awards for damages that included lost wages and emotional distress. The doctor has lost his privileges to perform surgery at the hospital the surgical error was performed at.
