Woman Awarded $19 Million in Medical Malpractice Case
An Illinois woman was awarded $19 million for damages suffered by her now 5 year-old son during his birth. Kimberly Coleman sued the US government on behalf of her son for birth injuries that occurred at the Touchette Regional Hospital in Centreville, IL. According to the suit, the doctor used a vacuum extractor 15 times during the birth, although the manufacturer recommended that the device be used only three times. Coleman’s son suffers from brain damage as a result. The physician (who was not board certified in obstetrics) was determined to be an employee of the United States, because his health care group receives funding from the federal government.
