Bypass Surgery Rates Exposed
The report was put together by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and has been posted on their website for public viewing.
Details of the Report
According to the report, the surgeons performed 40, 377 bypass surgeries in the state of California during the two-year period.
Of these surgeries, the average death rate was 3.08%, or about one death for every 30 patients having the operation.
The report rated the surgeons and hospitals using a formula that adjusted factors that can increase the risk that a patient will die, such as their age, gender, medical conditions and whether or not they had any previous heart surgeries.
“This is the most reliable and objective data we have on surgeon performance in the state,” says Joseph Parker, director of the Healthcare Outcomes Center.
Reason for the Report
“You can’t always choose your hospital when you’re having an emergency, but the report has an indirect effect on consumers by providing the hospital and surgeon with objective benchmarks and an incentive to improve their care,” explains Parker.
Coronary artery disease in California is the leading cause of adult admission into hospitals, besides for childbirth.
