$10M Settlement Reached in Nursing Home Case
A settlement was recently reached in suit filed by the family of a Cleveland woman against Life Care Centers of America.
The family was awarded $1.5 million for compensatory damages in the suit after the family found the home was negligent and reckless.
Woman Neglected at Nursing Home
Verdie Matthews, 83, was admitted to the Life Care nursing home for short-term rehabilitation therapy between April 4, 2006 and May 1, 2006.
She reportedly died only four days after leaving a Life Care nursing home and was only 92 pounds at the time of her death.
Matthews’ son filed the suit claiming that his mother had developed severe dehydration and malnutrition while staying at the home.
The family’s attorney accused the staff at the home of falsifying fluid and nutrition intake records and not properly feeding or hydrating Matthews.
Jury Sides with Victim’s Family
After deliberation, the jury found Life Care guilty of being negligent in the care of Matthews and held the nursing home responsible for the health decline of the woman.
“I’m very happy with the verdict,” says Thomas Hornbuckle, the family’s attorney stated after the jury announced their decision.
