Recent Survey Exposes Doctor Error’s

According to a recent survey released last week, many doctors who have made mistakes in the past suffer from sleep deprivation and a loss of confidence, which only makes them vulnerable to making more mistakes.

Stress While at Work

The lead author of the study, Amy Waterman, a psychologist at the University of Washington, explains that job stress due to doctor errors could make some prone to depression and even cause them to make additional mistakes.

Many of the doctors involved in the study said they would like counseling or help after making mistakes but hospitals and health organizations don’t offer support.

Many facilities fear lawsuits and therefore won’t allow doctors to openly discuss their mistakes, says Dr. Donald Berwick, a professor at Harvard.

The Survey

The survey involved 3, 171 doctors in St. Louis, Seattle and Canada.

2,909 of the doctors admitted to being involved with minor and major medical errors.

The results of the study are to be published in the August edition of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.

Berwick explains that doctors need self-esteem boosters and optimism to successfully treat their patients.

“Who wants a wounded healer?” he asks.
