Doctor Sues His Hospital For Wife’s Death

A doctor is suing his own hospital for unspecified damages after medical staff failed to perform emergency surgery that could have saved his wife’s life.

Patty Phillips, a 55-year-old marathon runner, was admitted to St. Joseph Medical Center on March 19 for extreme abdominal pain. She never received emergency surgery and ended up dying the next day.

Dr. Terry Phillips, her husband, said it was clear that his wife’s condition required immediate surgery. His lawsuit alleges that not only did his wife not receive surgery that could have saved her, but she spent hours in a storage area bed without proper monitoring before she died.

The autopsy report revealed that Phillip’s wife had 20 inches of damaged intestine.

Dr. Phillips worked at St. Joseph for a decade and continues to work for Franciscan Health System, the owner of the hospital.

“I don’t have it in for St. Joe’s,” Phillips said. He added that many of the doctors are his friends – some he considers to be among the best in the business.

Hospital officials refused to comment on the lawsuit, but Gale Robinette, a spokesperson for Franciscan, said, “Life was lost, and for that we express our deepest sympathies to the patients family and friends.”
