$16M Verdict in Failure to Diagnose Case
A jury recently handed down one of Connecticut’s largest wrongful death verdicts—$16 million to the family of a man who died of a heart attack in 1994 after doctors failed to diagnose his cardiac disease.
Gary Carlson, a 49-year-old truck driver, worked three jobs and was hoping to retire early. When he died, his widow and estate sued Dr. Robert Goldsmith and Stamford Medical Group for wrongful death caused by failure to diagnose.
“It’s a validation of the injustice that was done by the negligent taking of a good man’s life. This was going to be time to enjoy the fruits of all those hard years working,” said Josh Koskoff, attorney for the family.
In 2003, a jury awarded the family $10 million in damages. The defendants appealed the verdict and a Superior Court jury issued the $16 million verdict.
