Hospital Death Rates Exposed
A new website was recently launched that exposes death rates from heart attack, heart failure, and pneumonia at hospitals throughout the U.S.
The website, called Hospital Compare, was developed by the government and focuses on providing information to the public on hospital death rates.
Website to Guide Patients
Hospital Compare will help both healthcare providers and patients to score various medical centers and have their opinions published to help future patients.
Hospitals in turn can compare previous results with newer ones and attempt to better their service and healthcare.
The site also enables patients and their families to get a firsthand look of mortality rates and choose where they go based on the hospital’s reputation.
Death Rates at Hospitals
Before this website, hospitals were responsible for announcing when their death rates reached a number above average.
The nationally approved average is reportedly 16.1 percent for heart attack, 11.1 percent for heart failure and 11. 4 percent for pneumonia.
The numbers published on the site are supposedly adjusted according to previous conditions of patients in order to ensure that all risk factors are excluded from reports.
“I hope that this empowers groups of patients and community groups and hospital boards to engage in a conversation with their institution,” explains Harlan Krumholz, a professor from Yale University.
