Hospital Errors Reported at Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart Hospital in Washington has had to publicly report 27 serious hospital mistakes after 20 surgeries were performed on the wrong bodies statewide last year.
Washington hospitals also reported 83 incidents of severe, life threatening pressure ulcers and 31 instances of objects being left in bodies after surgery.
Hospital Under fire
When doctors at Sacred Heart operated on two wrong bodies last spring, officials discovered the mistakes were due to a backward X-ray and misidentified spinal surgery site.
Since these incidents, a new policy has been implemented for X-rays to be performed and reviewed in the operating room before the procedure.
Are Hospitals Held Accountable?
According to Byron Plan, manager for the Health Care Survey office, hospitals are not disciplined for the mistakes they make.
Although Sacred Heart, along with other hospitals throughout the country, are creating new policies and taking extra caution to prevent errors from occurring in the future, there are still mistakes being made daily at hospitals and health care centers.
The chief medical officer at Sacred Heart, Dr. Jeff Collins, claims the new laws and policies haven’t “changed our procedures much at all, except for additional paperwork.
