Inaccurate 'America’s Best' Hospital List

The 50 top-ranked hospitals in a cardiac care list that was published in the July issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine is under question by doctors who claim the list is inaccurate.

The list claims to name the hospitals that scored highest in infrastructure, inpatient cardiovascular mortality rates and overall worldwide reputation among cardiologist.

List Questioned

Doctors Michael O’Brien and Eric D. Peterson from Duke University argue that the rating statistics are not as accurate as they should be.

“Most rating systems seem to do a reasonable job at identifying groups of hospitals that perform well on average, yet there is considerable uncertainty regarding the true performance of a particular hospital,” the doctors explain.

According to the doctors, some of most reputable hospitals in the country were rated as being poor, while some average facilities were rated as being excellent.

Only teaching hospitals and those that meet the minimum standards for infrastructure are listed in the rating.

“Some of these features are somewhat subjective, and the association between these aggregate measures and the ‘best quality’ is not clear,” say Dr. O’Brien and Dr. Peterson.
