More findings of mistakes are surfacing in the medical world and researchers are discovering that many mental and physical problems are falling through the cracks.

Pediatric Errors

Children with behavioral, emotional and mental problems are often being misdiagnosed and mistreated due to pediatric errors.

According to Stephen Hinshaw, professor and chairman of psychology at the University of California, Berkley, there are a few factors that are to blame for this.

Hinshaw claims that due to insufficient accessibility, availability and affordability of treatments, children with illnesses like autism are not being properly treated.

He also contributes the negligence to the low reimbursement and treatment costs for child diagnosis.

According to researchers, 34 percent of pediatric deaths are due to missed diagnoses, some which could have been prevented if caught in time.

In a review of 63,707 child and adult surgery patients, researchers discovered that between 15 and 19 percent of patients did not have a condition that required the surgery.

Drug Errors

In 2003, the FDA’s voluntary reporting system, MedWatch, found that there were 400,000 complaints of adverse drug reactions.

There were also 3,000 reports of medical errors, due to mislabeling, the confusion of drug names and mishandling of medication.
