$17M Settlement Reached in Medmal Case
A woman in New York was recently awarded $17 million in the suit she filed against a local hospital.
The suit was filed against Strong Memorial Hospital in Henrietta for organ damage the woman suffered from during her delivery.
Delivery Takes Bad Turn
Brenda Schenk, 37, was forced to receive a C-section during her delivery at the hospital.
During the delivery, Schenk’s organs were reportedly damaged, which resulted in the removal of her transplanted pancreas.
Due to her diabetes, Schenk’s kidney and pancreas had to be transplanted years before her pregnancy.
The suit claims that because of poor treatment on the part of doctors at the hospital, pancreatic fluid and urine leaked into her abdominal cavity, which caused the overall damage.
The fluid reportedly burned her organs and immediately ate though her abdominal wall and doctors were then required to remove her pancreas.
Mother’s Dream Turns to Nightmare
Although Schenk delivered a healthy baby girl, the time she gave birth was anything but the happy moment she envisioned.
“Instead of the birth of this child being the high point in her life, which it could have been and should have been, it turned out to be a nightmare,” says Steven Pegalis, the attorney for the family.
