Family Wins $6 Million In Pediatric Malpractice Lawsuit
A six million dollar verdict was recently handed down in a medical malpractice case involving a baby who developed severe brain damage and a seizure disorder as a result of delayed medical treatment.
According to the complaint, the young girl – now two and a half years old – had been exposed to a bacterial infection for which her mother was treated during pregnancy. When her mother brought her to the pediatrician six weeks after birth for a high fever, the doctor failed to review the medical records noting the exposure.
As a result of the doctor’s failure to diagnose the condition and administer the necessary medication in a timely manner, the young girl suffered sepsis, meningitis, and ultimately permanent brain damage. She also developed seizures that cannot be treated with medication.
“It is shocking to think that a pediatrician would withhold antibiotics to such a sick baby. There can be no good explanation, especially since the results are so very tragic,” said attorney Allan Zelikovic.
After spending nearly her entire first year of life in hospitals, the girl now must endure daily medical treatments and therapies at home. The jury award will be used by her family to help pay for the overwhelming costs needed to care for her.
