Medical Negligence Suit Filed Due to Staph Infection

A medical negligence and wrongful death lawsuit was recently filed against two Naples physicians who treated a 53-year-old food service employee.

The suit is finally being heard six years after the death of the woman who after being operating on for knee injuries developed a staph infection.

Negligence Details

Jean Beattie was working in the Collier County School District when she fell in the cafeteria, injuring her knee.

When she arrived to Gulf coast Orthopedic Specialists, Dr. Leon Mead did an ultrasound to rule out blood clots in her leg.

An MRI showed Beattie had torn cartilage in the knee.
When given her treatment options for the injury, Beattie chose to have arthroscopic surgery

After seeing the rheumatologist, Dr. John Gridley, Beattie was admitted into the North Collier hospital after feeling disoriented and having severe pains in her body.

Tests revealed Beattie's white blood count was elevated and her heart was enlarged.

She died on July 1, 2003 due to a severe staph infection.

The Allegations

The suit, filed by Jean's husband, Alexander, questions the treatment given to Beattie by the two doctors.

Alexander claims that the physicians failed to recognize the complications and did not treat the knee injury properly, causing the infection.

Beattie's attorney, Gregg Hollander, says of Jean's sudden death, “It was preventable, a simple test could have been performed by both physicians and it was not.”

He goes on to say that the doctor's negligence is responsible for her death.
