Jury Awards Stroke Victim $2.1M in Malpractice Suit

A McCracken County jury ordered Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Ky. to pay $2.1 million to a woman who claimed she suffered a stroke due to substandard medical care.

The jury awarded Cynthia Featherston of Metropolis, Ill. $2.1 million in a medical malpractice case following a four-day circuit court trial.

According to Featherston’s attorney William McMurry, her stroke could have been prevented if physicians had given her a drug known as TPA to break up blood clots when she went to the ER in January 2005.

She claims the doctors acted negligently in not giving her the proper drug, and the stroke she suffered as a result has exposed her to undue risk. She has since accumulated almost $100,000 in medical bills as a result of the stroke, and is also likely to require extensive treatment in the future.

The defense claimed that they didn’t give her the drug because she was not a good candidate for it. But the jury didn’t buy it. Nine of 12 jurors agreed that Lourdes Hospital should pay Featherston $90,708.40 for past medical expenses, $1.67 million for future medical expenses, and $350,000 for pain and suffering
