Surgeon Removes Healthy Kidney
An investigation is currently taking place at a Minneapolis hospital where a surgeon made a life threatening mistake during surgery.
The surgeon reportedly removed a healthy kidney during surgery, instead of the cancerous one a wrongsite error.
According to reports, such an incident was unprecedented at the hospital.
The mistake came to light when the kidney on the wrong side was supposedly identified on the patient’s medical charts as being cancerous.
Hospital at Blame
The error occurred at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park last week and the patient has been unnamed in reports regarding the incident.
“We feel just profoundly responsible for this,” explains Dr. Samuel Carlson, the chief medical officer for Park Nicollet Health Services, which owns the hospital.
Hospital Apologizes to Family
Officials from the hospital reportedly apologized to the patient’s family for the mistake and have promised to support them in any way they can.
“This is a devastating tragedy for the family,” say members of the hospital staff. “It is also a tragedy for all of us here at Park Nicollet.”
Statistics show that two dozen wrong-site surgeries have been reported in the state Health Department between October 2006 and October 2007.
