Doctors Remove Wrong Kidney; Woman Sues

An 86-year-old woman has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against her doctors after they removed her healthy kidney instead of the cancerous one.

Dr. Kenneth Hawkins at the Horizon Medical Center performed a CT scan on Goldie Claude in February. At that time, he identified the cancerous kidney as the one on the left.

In his report, however, he noted the right kidney as cancerous. Neither Hawkins nor the person who transcribed his report noticed the error.

The report then made its way to the surgeon who “apparently sees in it that the cancer is in the right kidney,” said Nashville attorney Randall Kinnard.

Doctors only discovered the mistake after the surgery when lab work revealed that the removed kidney was healthy. Different doctors later removed as much of the cancerous kidney as possible.

Claude is suing Hawkins and Dr. Michael Spalding at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville for unspecified damages. Spalding was the surgeon who actually removed the healthy kidney. The lawsuit also names both hospitals.

As a result of the mistake, Claude has been forced to stop working. She previously worked two 12-hour shifts per week at a small health care facility.

“I’m not in too good of health right now. I have nervous spells. I’m just living on a little over a third of a kidney with the help of God,” she said.
