Young Athlete Awarded $18.5 Million in Mis-filled Prescription Case

A Middlesex County jury recently awarded a young athlete $18.5 million in damages suffered as the result of a mis-filled prescription that left him paralyzed.

Anton Weck, now 25-years-old, was 17 when doctors told him that he had acute lymphocytic leukemia. For three years, Weck underwent painful medical treatments, including chemotherapy, for his condition.

Two weeks after receiving a clean bill of health from his doctors, Weck was unable to walk.

In May 2001, Weck went to Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick to receive his final drug treatment. The pharmacist erroneously mixed two cancer-fighting drugs – Methrothrexate and Vincristine – which were supposed to be kept separate.

The cross-contaminated drugs were injected into Weck’s lower spine causing him to lose the use of his legs.

According to the lawsuit, the hospital tried to cover up the error. The hospital denied this claim.

Both the hospital and the pharmacist who mixed the crippling dosage were held legally responsible for Weck’s injury.

The jury ordered the defendants to pay compensatory damages to cover Weck’s future medical expenses, lost earnings, disability, pain and suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life.
