New York medical malpractice debate continues
The debate of whether or not New York medical malpractice caps will fix the “crisis” has been a continual debate. Consumer group Public Citizen, along with trial lawyers believe the statistics speak for themselves and that the majority of claims are by a small percentage of doctors.
Many question the classification of a “crisis”, Assemblyman Alexander Grannis believes, “there’s no question insurance is expensive, but this market is not in a crisis.” A report by the New York Public Interest Research Group found that the actual New York medical malpractice payments made in 2002 by doctors was actually less than the previous year and malpractice payments are lower than any time in five years.
