Pennsylvania hospital malpractice expenses revealed

The Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council announced yesterday that the state's 182 general hospitals paid out $636 million in medical malpractice expenses in fiscal year 2003 to 2004.

The payouts included money spent on malpractice insurance premiums and payouts to injured patients made by hospitals that are self-insured. Equaling 2.67 percent of revenues from treating patients, of every $100 the hospitals received for treatment of patients $2.67 went to malpractice costs.

Data collection began only recently, so the council said it would continue to gather this information to aid its efforts to control medical liability costs.
