Pennsylvania Medical Society makes false claims
The Pennsylvania Medical Society has been lobbying for over three years for medical malpractice insurance reform because it claimed high payout medical malpractice cases had driven Pennsylvania physicians out of the state. Now the group is finding itself in a predicament, as it appears its claims have been unfounded.
Now, the medical group is finding it is the target of a lot of angry people. Lawmakers are very upset with the push to cap damages at $250,000 for pain and suffering in medical malpractice case awards, which is likely to be stalled after the recent revelation. Some lawmakers were so upset with the false claims made by the medical group that they have called for an investigation.
There were $40 million in surcharges levied on motorists with moving violations and cigarette taxes were raised $190 million to provide Pennsylvania doctors with $230 million in relief on their insurance premiums. The smokers and motorists are not happy to discover the overcharges may have been made under false pretenses.
